Hello !
META tags are only a small part of the equation. Years ago, META keywords were very important in ranking sites, but people exploited this old loophole and the search engines changed their algorithms.
The two basic areas of SEO are on-page and off-page. On-page is what you have direct control over: domain name, meta data, title tags, H1, H2 and so on, images, ALT tags, video and (importantly) quality unique content. Page load time, the presence of Google webmaster tools (configured properly) and other factors also exist.
