NoFollow do very little for ranking, you still need to have some to maintain a natural looking link profile, least we forget any link created "for the purpose of search rank manipulation" is a search engine guideline violation. Some say they may help a site's "authority"

Focus on both on page & off page SEO for better keywords ranking.

In on page SEO mainly focus on title tag with your keywords, create proper description with your keywords, alt text creation, robot.txt etc.

In off page SEO mainly focus on quality content & back-links from quality sites. Also focus on SMO for your site traffic.

I completely agree with you, nofollow links doesn't help to increase website ranking. Such links are used to get traffic, but if you are getting nofollow backlink from a site with PR and domain authority than it is beneficial for your site.

No follow link will not pass any link juice to you, but will help to increase the traffic. And there should be submission of both types of links do follow as well as nofollow. as you said you have submitted more of no follow links, it can affect your site upto certain extended
