Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. It is defined in the XML 1.0 Specification produced by the W3C, and several other related specifications, all free open standards.

It is Extensible Markup Language that is used for developing site maps that are useful for search engines for fetching information from websites instantly. These site maps however are unreadable for human and they can read html based site maps.

XML was designed to transport and store data.

HTML was designed to display data.

The Difference Between XML and HTML

XML is not a replacement for HTML.

XML and HTML were designed with different goals:

XML was designed to transport and store data, with focus on what data is
HTML was designed to display data, with focus on how data looks

HTML is about displaying information, while XML is about carrying information.

XML stands for extensible markup language. Extensible means that the language is a shell, or skeleton that can be extended by anyone who wants to create additional ways to use XML.
