I use a combination of freeware and commercial software, which has never led to an infection.
- avast! Anti Virus
- Malware Bytes' Anti Malware
- KeyScrambler Premium
And of course, keeping your OS up-to-date is crucial. I come across many PCs with lots of updates pending installation. Security software can become fairly pointless if you're running an outdated OS with known security vulnerabilities present.

For physical access - whole disk encryption, bios password
For online access - firewall, for software access - mandatory access control

if you are asking for general security tips then see below.
Patch, Patch and Patch - when software updates come out, especially ones addressing “critical security” vulnerabilities, then its a very good idea to download and install the patch ASAP. If you don’t then a baddie may get access to your computer via that vulnerability. It is a well known fact that baddies will always be on alert for new vulnerabilities to exploit computer systems - what fails is people not patching fast enough.
Encrypt your drive(s) - if your computer is stolen then its quite easy to take the hard drive out of your computer and attached it to another to see the files. Encrypting your drive removes that ability.
For your general day-to-day user account do not have local admin rights - if you need to install or remove software then have another user account on your computer that you can log into and perform those actions. Malicious software such as malware, viruses, key loggers most of the time need the current user account to have local admin rights to install itself on the computer.
Use strong passwords - a given really these days and only use a password once. There is no excuse to use the same password all over the place - use a password vault like LastPass to store your passwords.
“Think before you click” - email comes in with an attachment? Think before you open it. Who sent it? If you know the person - were you expecting the attachment. Does it “sound” like them in the email? Before you click on a url have a look at it and see if it looks weird (gut feel).

securing your computer is easy if you take the proper precautions. Using secure passwords and verification processes will make it more difficult for another person or program to impersonate you and access your information. Using protective software will make it harder for a hacker, virus, or malicious software to penetrate your PC. In addition to protective programs, using encryptions and safe practices will help keep your data secure when you’re using the Internet.

Hello,
It depends on one's threat model, the security of any PC can not be generalized. Although, you can perform the following steps to make your computer/laptop more secure.
- Use Linux-based OS like Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, etc.
- Always encrypt your storage drive
- Use a pass-phrase instead of a password which should be long enough
- Do not install unknown software
- Prefer Free and Open Source Softwares
These are just a few basic tips. You can harden your security according to your preferences. I hope this clarifies your doubts. Have a nice day.
