VPS hosting offers a good balance between total control (Root Access privilege) and an affordable budget. Having a VPS account is just like operating a dedicated server.
With shared hosting, provider can get away with offering huge amounts of space simply because they know most people will never use that much. For example, if a shared hosting offers 100GB/account, and puts 500 user accounts on each server. Do they actually put 50,000GB of disk drive on that server? The answer is no, because they know that most people won't use more than 1GB or so, so they can get away with a much smaller disk drive, like maybe 1000GB. But if a VPS host offers 100GB/account, they have to actually put 100GB of disk space on that server they're renting you. If you looked at the free disk space on your hosting account, and saw that it was only 1GB, you'd complain that you weren't getting what you paid for. If they sign up 500 user accounts, they have to provide 50,000GB of storage.

There is no denying the fact that shared plan is most economical option for hosting as many people share the overall cost of server maintenance. This is generally affordable web hosting solution for small business. VPS has had much better uptime, is much faster, and gives you much more freedom. As for recommendation, have a look at 4java.ca - it offers cheap shared, VPS and dedicated server web hosting plans at cheap price. On VPS you will be able to install any panel you want.

You would get more privileges with a VPS than a shared plan. With a VPS you get root access to the servers, which enables you to install applications of your choice. As for recommendation, check out webhostgiant.com as it offers 50% off all the plans; gazzin.com which is quite reputable company which offers 30 day free trial on their shared reseller plans, use 'gazzincom' when ordering and moreover it offers discount on their VPS plans - use 'vpsnow' code.
So, you can compare them and choose the best one for you needs.

They are diffrent web hosting solutions at all as VPS is the same as dedicated server and shared is share d and you have nothing dedicated there and share whole server with other neighbors

vps is the way to go. if you need to configure anything or want customization you can do that at any time. On a shared hosting enviroment you will never get that.

Why not? You can find such web hosting but I believe that you won't be able to change or configure that...

Despite VPS is giving wider freedom there are shared hosting solutions which are really comparable to he VPS and even exceed some by the points. If you look at the offers of routhost.com, you could see the realy large specificatiopn on the only shared plan.

Hi,
Both services allow a single server to provide services for multiple users
Both services provide some level of compartmentalization to separate a given user's files and services from any other user's files and services
Both services offer an economical alternative to dedicated hosting
Deciding which type of hosting you will need is as simple (or complex) as your needs. Examining the appeal of shared hosting and VPS hosting is the best place to start when making an informed decision.

Well VPS may be more costly than shared, but when you use a VPS instead of shared. You will have less limitations. So basicly you are more free with a VPS. While with shared, you are restricted to certain scripts and how you use your cpanel and such.
So vps wins.

If the OP is a noob, it's better to start from a shared service from a low cost and reliable company like quillhost.com or hqhost.net or 2mhost.com. They are reputable enough companies to have a deal with them.

Shared Hosting is very popular because it is economical - the service allows multiple customers to share the resources of one computer, thereby spreading out costs among many. In order to protect the integrity of information, file security schemes are used. In order to insulate one customer from another, some key processes are mapped to a specific domain (customer). These solutions are workable, but the bottom line is that being on a shared server is like living in an apartment with a lot of common areas.
The Virtual Private Server (VPS) is designed to be economical, by allowing multiple customers to share the resources of one computer, yet with an extremely high degree of privacy and insulation. The separation is achieved by running a complete separate operating system for each customer. VPS customers have "root" level access and can enjoy many of the benefits of a dedicated server, at a much lower cost. VPS is like living in a town house, without the long term house payment!
advantages that VPS offers over shared hosting.
1. Security - VPS accounts are insulated from each other, minimizing the risk of unauthorized access from hackers as well as other customers. The isolation of your account also minimizes the risk of being impacted by a DoS attack that was intended for someone else.
2. Performance - All resources can be regulated in the VPS environment. One customer can not run away with a large share of the resources. You service will run reliably and predictably.
3. Protected Mail Service - Each VPS account has its own private mail server, filtered by Postini. This eliminates the risk that your mail service will be blacklisted due to abuses of others sharing the same mail service. It also allows you to take your inbox back from the SPAMMERS.
4. Customer Installed Applications - With our VPS you have your own partition and root access. You have the ability to install applications that we do not offer. Please note that we do not provide support for customer installed applications. You also must assume the responsibility to update any applications that you install in the event that a security vulnerability is discovered in the verson you install.
5. Flexibility - Some applications require that certain ports and/or protocols be opened or closed in the firewall. With Shared hosting, custom firewall configurations are not advisable for security reasons. Under the VPS, custom firewall configurations are feasible because of the partioning between customers. With a VPS, you can close ports using the IPTables feature. To open ports that are normally closed, or for more sophisticated firewall needs, choose our Custom Firewall Configuration service option.
6. Growth Path - Our VPS system allows us to manage your VPS as an image. This means that your entire environment can be restored from backup to any physical server with no changes to your configuration. You can also easily downgrade or upgrade your service with no downtime! For more information, please see the article Why VPS is Superior to Shared Hosting.

drawbacks of virtual servers is the problems related to maintenance. The virtual servers have their own OS and software. The physical server will have to look after all these operating systems without any fail. The control panel will have to make sure that the servers are delivering high performance with a superior up time. And the host needs to make sure that security and updates are offered without any issues.

its about - # Isolation - Virtuozzo provides isolation between each VPS and each customer. No customer can affect or crash other customers on the same server, even when customers have administrative access. Virtuozzo helps to minimize any downtime and eliminates issues and conflicts between customers.
# Customer Self - Management - A web based interface allows end users to backup, restore, manage, recover, repair and reinstall a VPS without web hosting technical support.
# Unmatched Plesk Support - Tight integration with Plesk includes templates that help use system resources well and expand system density for the best ROI and most efficient management of any service using virtualization.
# Flexible Resource Control - Virtuozzo has the capability of limiting the resources of each VPS, but it also can be configured to allow VPSs to burst and use available resources on the server. Virtuozzo provides the flexibility and control to customize and provide a range of services to meet the requirements of any customer.
# Complete Control & Administration Tools - Virtuozzo has a full set of tools for administrative level control including command line, GUI and web-based access. These intuitive tools to help you administer virtualized servers at any skill level, and manage Linux and Windows servers from the same interface.
# Application Templates and Support - Include common applications in service offerings. Leverage the Virtuozzo templating technology to maintain small application footprints and overhead and provision and update quickly and easily.
# Migration - Move VPSs to other physical servers to minimize the impact of server issues, upgrades or maintenance.
# Easy Customer Upgrades - Upgrading an existing customer to a new Virtuozzo service is simple, changing the resources, the configuration or even moving to a new server can be done in real-time and without service interruption.
# Backup and Restore - Self-administered incremental and scheduled backup capability comes as a part of the Virtuozzo feature set. End-user backups enable quickly restoring and resuming work without support intervention. Administrative backups ensure VPS, server and business continuity for your customers.

I would say that the majority of people looking for Web hosting don't even need the VPS technology even though they say they do. VPS technology is very good and managable - however, it does depend on the host themselves and how well they maintain their servers. A company with Shared hosting that has great server up-time, will seem better than a company with VPS technology and bad server up-time. It can go the other way around as well. So when it comes down to it, if you don't know a lot about Web hosting, you'll be fine choosing a host with shared hosting whose reliable and consistent. But, some people need the VPS technology due to certain applications or programming that they've done for their web site.

VPS is better because you can control almost everything, they offer less space for a VPS because is harder to oversell the resources.

Save hundreds of dollars when compared to dedicated server hosting. Avoid the performance problems of 'regular' virtual hosting and get root level control over your hosting. Keep your Code and Data Safe. Other web hosts may offer shared VMs where your programs run inside the same process as other site's programs. This is very insecure. It potentially exposes your applications, passwords, and your data.

Hi, is anyone know the advantage of VPS Hosting vs Shared Hosting? and why is it that VPS offer so little space and bandwidth compared to shared hosting?
Actually, you will get more disk space and bandwidth with VPS plans rather than shared hosting plan.
When to choose VPS hosting?
1. You need a root level access of your server.
2. To get more disk space, bandwidth limit.
3. When your application requires some custom component or need some functions enable like curl_exec() which is not advisable to install in shared environment.
4. VPS comes in cheaper prices than dedicated server. So it is a better option to go when you can not afford for a dedicated server.
Thanks!

I would say that the main asset of vps is the pricing and your ability to install applications you need.
Still you have to share resources (RAM, CPU etc) with other sites on the server, so it's essential to avoid bad neighbouring and also it's up to the customer to manage the server unlikely to the shared environment where everything has been taken care of by the provider. The type of support provided by each provider is different.
We are launching vps in a few weeks and we will offer free setup, bandwidth statistics and server monitoring into our support services.
There are various points which has been covered. Most often it might really boil down to the needs of an individual. If somebody does not need many customization then a Shared Hosting is the way to go. If customizations are needs and root/Administrator login is needed then Virtual Server is the way to go.
There some variants in the market which use different technologies to "virtualize". Hyper-V has been in the market for a while now and is coming up quite strong. Hyper-V is a Microsoft Technology.

I would go with a VPS simply because its much easier to move the data over to a dedicated system once you grow out of a VPS

The key differences which set VPS hosting apart from shared hosting are not a factor for those who wish to host a low-to-moderate traffic website and are happy with the level of control offered by a web hosting control panel like cPanel or Plesk. These individuals will prefer Shared Hosting for its perceived simplicity and ease of use: they generally do not have Linux system administration experience and they are not interested in picking up any.
Shared hosting also has the appeal of a bargain for those who are hunting "unlimited" bandwidth and storage space - many providers will make "unlimited" claims, despite the fact that there will always be a practical limit (which, to their eventual disappointment, bargain hunters overlook).
Linux virtual private servers offer the same complement of operating systems and software components which one would expect from a dedicated server. Those with experience administering Linux systems see the benefits in having access to configure their service for uses which extend far beyond e-mail service and web hosting. Individuals who are new to Linux administration often find that a VPS is the best place to start learning without buying their own hardware.
VPS hosting is often considered a step up from shared hosting: when it's time start supporting heavy traffic and custom applications, many will make the switch to VPS hosting after encountering the limitations of the shared hosting infrastructure.
hope you got the point.
