Canonical issue is of duplicate pages,Two web page have same content and different urls but you can't redirect it so their using canonical tag. Canonical tag should use in head section on your site.

Canonical is a tag which is used to inform the Google spider that particular content is not copy from the specific site. It is not the original content.
