Link farms are pages that consist solely of links to other pages but fail to offer any kind of useful content themselves. Site owners typically place their links on farms to artificially boost linking popularity and thus rankings on sites like Google. Some link farms are automatically generated, while site owners manage others as a repository of reciprocal links.

A link farm is any group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services. A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine

The matter of link farm can be approached from the content perspectives.

For example, you can find some top ranking websites which have links pages which look very much like the link farms as hundreds of links are exchanged but since the sites have unique and informative content pages, so there would be no problems regarding their rankings.

i have a correction on the bold text part... "links are exchanged"... A website which have too many link exchange partners is a different case from a link farm... Link farm is where a certain page(content) have so many hyperlinks(literally) on text(word per word) pointing to your site

A link farm is a large group of web pages created that contain hyperlinks to one another or a specific other page. Link farms are normally created by programs, rather than by human beings.
The main purpose of a link farm is to deceive the indexing programs of Internet search engines that assign rankings according to the number of pages that link to a specific page.

A link farm is a system where all the members are linked to each other via a common set of link pages. The result is that all members have a links page with the other members' web addresses on them. Many of these link programs have several hundred or even thousands of members, so by joining you have almost instant access to hundreds of other web sites that point links to your site. This can lead to your site looking very "popular".

Search Engines will penalize if you use link farms!

A link farm is website where links of different websites are crammed together without any sequences. These websites are created for getting links and not for any other purposes.

A link farm is a group of web sites that all link to every other member of the group. High risk with little reward.

Link farms can be advertised as services to build up your content. They are often set up by creating a network -- one that is often created with the sole purpose of gathering a number of locations from which to point at a website. Because Google dislikes links between unrelated sites, some link farms divide their links into categories or a directory.

How does linking to your own site affect your PR? For instance, in one article is 2 links to other articles on my site. Do that effect anything?

Link farm’ is a term that often is defined as a collection of sites that all have hyperlinks to every other site in the group. The term ‘link farm’ is intimately associated with black hat techniques of search engine optimization. Link farms can be avoided by researching the sites you want your link featured on. Check a site’s Page Rank and investigate its associates before submitting your link.

Link farm defination:A set of web pages created with the sole aim of linking to a target page, in an attempt to improve that page’s search engine ranking.Link Farms are typically devoid of content and are sometimes created under a domain squatting scheme. Link farms save space when one is maintaining several nearly identical copies of the same source tree.A link farm usually looks like a regular web page, but the majority of the content is hyperlinks often random and unrelated to other websites.

A link farm on the World Wide Web, is any group of sites that all hyperlink to every other website in the group to increase search engine optimization. In theory, the more websites that link to yours, the higher your ranking in the search engine results will be because the more links indicate a higher level of popularity among online user. However, search engines like Google consider link farming as a form of spam and have been implementing procedures to banish website that participate in link farming, so the term link farming has garnered negative connotations across the Internet.
