RWD use flexible images, flexible videos that adapts to the viewing device and environment. AWD focuses on design not browser. AWD adapts to detected device along with CSS and javascript.

Responsive Web Design provides the optimal viewing experience of a website, no matter what type of device the user is seeing it on. However, In Adaptive Web Design there are several distinct layouts for multiple screen sizes, and the layout used depends on the screen size used.
