The HTML sitemap is for humans. It is a quick map/overview of the pages on your site which are listed using links (with anchor text). People can use it to locate a page they need quickly and easily.

The XML sitemap is for search engine spiders/bots. It is there to tell the search engines which URLs are part of your website. It appears as code. It helps the search engines find pages that they might miss on a normal crawl and it is also good if you have dynamic content or is new. Submit the XML sitemap as a feed in webmaster tools.

The simplest explanation is that XML is primarily for the search engines while HTML is written for the users.

The XML sitemap protocol is specifically designed for spiders. In its simplest form, an XML sitemap is a 'behind the scenes' XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site). It's a map of all links in a site, uploaded to the root directory of a website, invisible to visitors. XML site maps are accessible to all major search engines (XML sitemaps are now supported by Google, Yahoo! and MSN), so they can more intelligently crawl the site through both top and deep level links.

HTML sitemaps, however offer only a general guide to a site, an overview, not necessarily containing all the links available to spider in a website. This is especially the case for websites that contain dynamically generated pages (shopping carts, etc). A visitor might refer to an HTML site map to help them navigate when they can't find a specific page easily. This visitor readability and usability issue that allows users to locate pages within a large site will give weight to your site in the SERP's, (search engine ranking pages) as they will weight your pages favourably for catering to your users and being user-friendly.

HTML Sitemap: It's for human visitor. This sitemap accumulates all website link on one page. We can put 100 links on one page.

XML Sitemap: XML sitemap, sometimes called Google sitemap is very beneficial for your website. This sitemap provides a single location to search engine crawler to crawl all of your web pages.
