It is Indirect link to your Website, its keeping track of other webpages which has your website links. For Example, write a post in your Website blog, in any social media submit the blog link with some description about the post, That is how you are creating back links to your website or website blog.

Backlinks simply mean other sites that are linking back to your site. They may link to your site because
1-they find your site to be of interest to their audience (whether positive or negative)
2-your site has great, witty or unique information that they want to share to their readers
3-you requested them to link to your site or include your site in their list of recommended resources or related links, if they have any
4-you went to their forum and put a post there with a link to your site
You can get backlinks to your site from many places.Best way is to promote your site to social networks (Twitter, Facebook..), bookmarking sites (Digg, Stumbleupon...), Article directories (Ezine articles, GoArticles...) and web 2.0 (Squidoo, Hubpages...). You will also get natural traffic to your page from users visiting those sites. Or you can buy links from websites like SEOclerks.

Back links are those links which you can create from the other website with the help of off-page seo techniques like Social bookmarking, forum posting, blog posting etc. Back links are the main part in seo without back links you can't increase your ranking of keywords as well as your website.

Search engines want websites to have a level playing field, and look for natural links built slowly over time. While it is fairly easy to manipulate links on a web page to try to achieve a higher ranking, it is a lot harder to influence a search engine with external backlinks from other websites.
