A 301 redirect means that the page has moved to a new location, permanently. A 302 redirect means that the move is temporary. Search engines need to figure out whether to keep the old page, or replace it with the one found at the new location.

A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect. There are very few instances where this type of redirect should be used, but unfortunately it is the easiest to implement. This means that many webmasters unfamiliar with search engine mechanics use the wrong type of redirect.

The 302 redirect is a Web server function where an old URL can be redirected to a new one. 302 Redirect is a "temporary" redirect status. For more information on this and other types of redirects, please see the "Web Server Error Messages" in the Quick Reference section of Webopedia.
