A statistical indicator providing a representation of the value of the securities which constitute it. Indices often serve as barometers for a given market or industry and benchmarks against which financial or economic performance is measured.

A statistical measure of change in an economy or a securities market. In the case of financial markets, an index is an imaginary portfolio of securities representing a particular market or a portion of it. Each index has its own calculation methodology and is usually expressed in terms of a change from a base value. Thus, the percentage change is more important than the actual numeric value.

The Google index is similar to an index in a library, which lists information about all the books the library has available. However, instead of books, the Google index lists all of the webpages that Google knows about. When Google visits your site, it detects new and updated pages and updates the Google index.

An index is another name for the database used by a search engine. It contains information on all the websites the search engine was able to find. If a website is not in a search engine’s index, users will not be able to find it using that search engine. Search engines regularly update their indexes.

An index is a method of sorting data by creating keywords or a listing of the data. A great example of an index of Computer Hope's hardware listing. When referring to the Internet or web pages, an index is a file named as index.htm, index.html, index.asp, or index.php. The index file is the first file loaded when accessing a directory on a website. For example, when visiting Computer Hope at http://www.computerhope.com you are really accessing http://www.computerhope.com/index.htm since both addresses point to the same file. If the index file is missing from the directory and directory indexing is not disabled in the .htaccess file any visitor accessing that directory on the Internet will see a list of all the files in the directory instead of a web page or error message.
