Tags are self-assigned “labels” that you can use to categorize the posts on your blog. Choose broader tags for your posts as opposed to super tightly niched tags. Don’t use multiple versions of the same tag.

Keywords are used by search engines to identify what your blog and your blog articles are about. A search engine knows what terms are highly searched by users, and looks for those words and phrases on web pages. The search engine uses this information to assign a particular blog or website a page rank.

Even though you can choose your own tags and they can be whatever you want, consider using the list of highly searched keywords you’ve compiled as your tag list. The benefit of this is that keywords are terms you know people are searching for.

keywords are used to find things via search engines; tags are used to find things within your own blog. So, you would use keywords to help label your article so when people search on Google, they hopefully use the words in your article.

Tags also describe your article, but they do it more like an internal filing system, if you will. About a year ago, the Evil Mastermind wrote an article about using keywords in book titles. Let’s say that article wowed you (of course it did!) and you want to read other articles with similar content at Indies Unlimited.

A tag is usually applied to a person. This is when you are trying to get the attention of someone who might find what you are talking about important. So for example if I make a video talking about a product and I want the brand to know I am talking about it, I will mention or tag them in my post so that they get a notification.

Keywords are words both in the front end and back end that tell the search engines what this post is all about and what it should look for. So for example when I make a video, I will put a transcript in the description box for my entire video. I do this because it puts out all the keywords in YouTube so if someone is looking for something that my video has to do with, there is a better chance of it appearing.
