SEO that is not easy for the newbies and do start doing that in the right way you need to learn a bit about it and then start over.

first of all you need to define keywords for your site. You may use wordtracker or google keyword tool for this purpose.
After than submit your site link to the free directories. while submitting your site put keyword in the title field.
after then place your site link in the signature of some do follow forums. as mine brochure printing site.

First you get some basic knowledge about seo.SEO is basically of two types one is ON page Seo and 2nd is off page seo.First you have to work on ON page seo under this you have to prepare a meta for your website like keyword selection etc and in off page seo you will do some off page techniques like dir submission,article submission,press release,blog commenting,forum posting etc.

Well, at the first prepare the site, update proper content and concentrate on on page optimization ( meta tag, url optimizing, H tags etc). After the site run well with out any error.. join Google webmaster tool. if found any error like broken link, duplicate meta tag, HTML error etc will report u . Also submit XML sitemap on it. Once finish try to do off page optimization. Link building is the main part of it. Build links from high quality sites. Avoid spam, adult and dating sites

Yeah, I would recommend hearing out Google's side of the story first, and then reading webmasters' guides and discussions. I wish I had done it in this order, because webmaster advice will make more sense if you already know what Google has mentioned.

If this a business web site, identify you core keywords and try to optimize for the best keyword phrases, keep the content on your web site relevant to your business.
Social bookmarking will help you a lot in this. Hope this is the basic you can do at first. this is a continuous and steady process, take it step by step

Participating in forums to get seo knowledge is the better strategy.
In order to optimize your site, initially you should do some keyword research and focus on few less competitive keywords.
Focus on your homepage and one of the inne rpage which tells about your services initially to optimize on search engine. Do some on-page optimization.

And do some quality link building like blog commenting, forum posting with links in your signature , article submission and press release. Also try doing social bookmarking and few free directory submissions.
