Robot.txt helps to tell search engine, which all pages of the website need to be crawled. Whereas Sitemap.xml file have a list of all the website URL's with the parameter's like change frequency, last modified date, priority of each individual page with home page.

For a website, it is important to include both this file i.e. sitemap and robot file in the root of the website.

Sitemap.xml - XML Sitemap like a blueprint for your house and each web page were a room.
XML Sitemaps are important for SEO because they make it easier for Google to find your site’s pages—this is important because Google ranks the web pages, not just websites.

Robots.txt - The most common usage of Robots.txt is to ban crawlers from visiting private folders or content that gives them no additional information. Robots.txt Allowing Access to Specific Crawlers.
Allow everything apart from certain patterns of URLs.

Through sitemap, you can crawl each and every single webpage of your website to search engine

Through robot.txt, you can give instructions to search engine about which webpage you want to crawl and which you don't.
