HTTP is the thing that enables consumers to send and receive info online. It controls how data is presented to customers, maybe not so much regarding the way in which the data gets to customers. This allowed for the quick transmission of data but also introduced several flaws.
HTTPS was initially designed to ensure data transmission was protected, like in charge authorizations and other sensitive information. The important difference between this and HTTP is that HTTPS uses secure socket layer (SSL) to transmit information, which makes it safer.

It is important that if you do allow HTTP and redirect to HTTPS, that cookies are marked as secure. When doing this it is highly advisable to implement HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) which is a web security mechanism that declares that browsers are to only use HTTPS connections.

HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is an encrypted version of HTTP, which is the main protocol used for transferring data over the World Wide Web. HTTPS protects the communication between your browser and server from being intercepted and tampered with by attackers.
