Viral marketing, viral advertising, or marketing buzz are buzzwords referring to marketing techniques involving pre-existing social marketing services and other systems to attempt to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing targets (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral operations, analogous to the pass on of viruses or computer viruses (cf. Internet memes and memetics). It can be delivered by person to person or increased by the network effects of the Internet and mobile systems. Viral advertising is personal and, while coming from a determined sponsor, it does not mean businesses pay for its distribution. Most of the famous viral advertisings circulating online are advertisings paid with a sponsor company, launched either on their own platform (company webpage or social media profile) or on social media websites such as YouTube.

I have to agree that when you notice an increase in traffic on your site suddenly then that seems to be viral already. Yes, viral marketing primary use social media to promote products and services. This is a business strategy to spread information and catch information from one person to the other in order to advertise something.

Viral marketing depends on a high pass-along rate from person to person. If a large percentage of recipients forward something to a large number of friends, the overall growth snowballs very quickly. If the pass-along numbers get too low, the overall growth quickly fizzles.

On the Internet, viral marketing is any marketing technique that induces Web sites or users to pass on a marketing message to other sites or users, creating a potentially exponential growth in the message's visibility and effect. One example of successful viral marketing is Hotmail, a company, now owned by Microsoft, that promotes its service and its own advertisers' messages in every user's e-mail notes.

Viral marketing is a buzzword for promotional messages that spread through social networks. Viral marketing campaigns hinge on finding a catchy medium for a message and then propagating it through different online channels including blogs, microblogs, posts, crowdsourcing and so on. The actual message may be in the form of an advertorial, but is more likely to come in the form of a branded game, video clip, image or other format that can be branded. Generally speaking, the goal of a viral marketing campaign is to raise brand awareness - or mindshare - rather than convert clicks into sales of a specific product.

Viral marketing is known as a business strategy that uses existing social networks to promote a service or product. Its name refers to how consumers spread information about a product with other people in their social networks, much in the same way that a virus spreads from one person to another.

This form of marketing starting from a hypothetical customer always tell others about products or services that your customers feel satisfied when using. It can be anything. It can be a content which is in the form of images. The content must have "Controversial" statement into it. Any simple post can't be viral until and unless it is unique and eye catchy.
I agree from the above definition shared in this thread.

Viral marketing refers to a technique where content strategists purposely design content that’s both easily transportable and highly engaging so that it’s shared quickly by many people. The vehicle is the key component – the need for the medium to spread through people rather than paying a lot for promotion or airplay. Humorous videos are quite popular, but there are also image memes, and even shared incentives that work like group discounts. :o
