A Sitemap is a XML document that rundowns the URLs for a site. It permits website admins to incorporate extra data about every URL: when it was last upgraded, how regularly it changes, and how essential it is in connection to different URLs in the webpage. This permits web search tools to slither the webpage all the more cleverly.

Like most have said, the sitemap.xml contains all the URL's your website has. Then the search engine crawlers will be able to crawl via your sitemap, instead of finding your links via other links

In its simplest form, a sitemap is a document that lists all URLs of your website (that you want crawled). The document details additional information such as the date a page was last modified, how frequently a page may change and whether the page should be given priority over others.

Sitemaps have 2 uses:

1) User Navigation. HTML sitemaps are created for the website visitor to give them a table of contents of your website.

2) Search Engines. XML sitemaps will communicate your website contents to search engines so they have an easier time indexing the contents of a website. If a website does not have good global navigation or linkage, the search engines might miss what you consider to be very important information on your website. If a website has a lot of media (images, videos), it is also a good idea to create an image and video sitemap. It makes a huge difference.

Sitemap can be useful for getting your site indexed and the XML one can also help with indexation but there are no guarantees that pages in the XML sitemap will be indexed.

Sitemaps, as the name implies, are just a map of your site - i.e. on one single page you show the structure of your site, its sections, the links between them, etc. Sitemaps make navigating your site easier and having an updated sitemap on your site is good both for your users and for search engines.

Sitemap is of two types
1. XML Sitemap
2. HTML Sitemap

The XML sitemap is used to inform Google to crawl and index the entire website whereas HTML sitemap is for the users to identify the exact page on the website.

Sitemap is simply the map of the site or a single page that shows the structure of the website and links. Using it has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. It offers the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on the site. Through this, search engines will index your changed pages compared to when you don't have a sitemap.
