URL masking means that the visitors to the domain name will be forwarded to a destination website, however the URL in their browser address bar will remain the same. Also known as stealth redirection or URL hiding, this will ensure that your visitors see the orignal domain name and not the destination URL.

1&1 technology allows url masking for your domain. This means that www.yourdomain. com is still displayed in the web browser address bar even if your site is hosted at another location. This is particularly important when redirecting external domain names to 1&1 servers. With 1&1 packages URL masking cannot be turned on or off. If your package supports URL masking it is always on. If it does not support URL masking it is always off.

Link masking is about covering up a link so that it looks like another link. There are a few reasons you may want to mask your links:
1.Masking affiliate links – Some people resist clicking on your affiliate links simply because they know you’re about to make money off them.
2.To shorten or beautify a link – Some long URLs are a pain to copy and paste anywhere else online, and a greater pain to dictate over the telephone.
3.To track clicks and stats – Link masking is often used with a reporting software (like LinkTrackr) that helps you keep track of who clicked on your links and where the clicks are coming from.

In case of URL Masking the Domain Forwarding server sends the client a Frames page where the Frame Source contains the destination URL you have specified. This ensures that the URL in the address bar of the browser does not change though the client sees the destination page.

There are numerous ways to mask a URL — meaning the URL in the browser's address bar is not the actual URL to the content. Causing the browser's address bar to show a URL different than the actual URL of the web page being viewed is one definition of URL masking.
