A 301, or permanently moved, is a redirect that carries and distributes in an absolute manner. You should use a 301 to signify to the crawlers that your content has moved permanently.

301, "Moved Permanently" - for SEO process
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect which passes link juice (ranking power) to the redirected page. All old page ranking power transfer to the new page.
