Breadcrumbs are links that allow a user to track their path from the page they are currently viewing to the home page of your website. They appear close to the top of your page and reflect the structure of your site. Properly used site breadcrumbs can add context to the innermost of your pages and reduce several negative factors that improve the user experience on your site.

A type of text-based Web site navigation that breaks the site into links of categories and sub-categories allowing major categories of information to be linked in a range of sequential order. Breadcrumb navigation is displayed to the user, so they can easily see exactly where that Web page is located within the Web site. While many types of Web sites use a breadcrumb navigation, it is becoming increasingly common for electronic commerce Web sites to display categories of products in this way.

Website navigation should give visitors easy access to information and simplify their ability to return to the home or section-entry pages. Early website designs often used rudimentary -- if any -- navigation systems, relying on visitors' use of their browsers' "Back" and "Forward" buttons to deliver them from page to page. Especially on large, dynamic, growing websites, today's designers implement sets of links designed to traverse the path from the visitor's current page view to navigation milestones leading to and beyond that destination. Web designers call these sets of links "bread crumbs."

Breadcrumbs or breadcrumbs trail is a graphical control element used as a navigational aid in user interfaces. It allows users to keep track of their locations within programs, documents, or websites. The term comes from the trail of bread crumbs left by Hansel and Gretel in the fairy tale of the same name.
