Sitemap - In its simplest form, a sitemap is a document that lists all URLs of your website (that you want crawling). The document details additional information such as the date a page was last modified, how frequently a page may change and whether the page should be given priority over others.

XML Sitemap
A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. It allows webmasters to include additional information about each URL: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. This allows search engines to crawl the site more intelligently.

HTML Sitemap

A sitemap is a visual or textually organized model of a Web site's content that allows the users to navigate through the site to find the information they are looking for, just as a traditional geographical map helps people find places they are looking for in the real world. A site map is a kind of interactive table of contents, in which each listed item links directly to its counterpart sections of the Web site.

With the help of sitemap, a site administrator has the ability to tell/feed search engines data on the pages of a site they want to be crawled as well as the priority or hierarchy of site content alongside information on when the page was last updated.
