A directory is an organizational unit, or container, used to organize folders and files into a hierarchical structure. Directories contain bookkeeping information about files that are, figuratively speaking, beneath them in the hierarchy.

Directories contain bookkeeping information about files that are, figuratively speaking, beneath them in the hierarchy. You can think of a directory as a file cabinet that contains folders that contain files. Many graphical user interfaces use the term folder instead of directory.

A directory or folder is nothing more than a location on a disk used for storing information about files. The topmost directory in any file is called the root directory. A directory that is below another directory is called a subdirectory. A directory above a subdirectory is called the parent directory.

A directory is a location for storing files on your computer. Directories are found in a hierarchical file system, such as Linux, MS-DOS, OS/2, and Unix. In the picture to the right is an example of the tree command output that shows all the local and subdirectories (e.g. the "big" directory in the cdn directory).

A directory for SEO is just like other business directories or business listings, where the directory compiles a list of businesses. A web directory for SEO is a website that journals topics in one or more categories and can also serve as a search engine. Websites like Wikipedia and YouTube are examples of directories.
