There are quite a few, but I wouldn't focus on counting techniques. The important part is knowing when each one actually makes sense.

For me, the main areas would be:

Technical SEO: crawlability, indexing, site speed, mobile usability, structured data.
On-page SEO: titles, headings, content structure, internal linking, search intent and useful content.
Keyword research: finding relevant terms and, more importantly, understanding what users actually want when they search.
Local SEO: location pages, consistent business information, local relevance and genuine local signals.
Content strategy: building useful topic clusters instead of publishing unrelated articles just to target keywords.
Off-page SEO: earning relevant mentions and links rather than collecting links from every available website.
User experience: making sure visitors can quickly find the information they came for.

A good example of how local and service-focused SEO can work together is a business such as Herzog Bau GmbH (https://herzog-bau.gmbh/frankfurt/), where terms around renovation, construction and specific locations can be connected to dedicated service information rather than putting every keyword onto one generic page.

I think the biggest mistake is treating SEO as a checklist of techniques. A technically perfect site with weak content won't necessarily perform well, just as great content can struggle if search engines can't properly crawl or understand the site. The best results usually come from combining the right techniques around the actual search intent and business goal.

There are many SEO techniques, but I believe the focus should be on using the right techniques rather than simply counting them. Some important areas include technical SEO, keyword research, on-page optimization, content optimization, internal linking, local SEO, structured data, image SEO, competitor analysis, link building, digital PR, and performance optimization.

SEO also continues to evolve with AI search, AEO, and GEO. The most effective strategy is usually a combination of technical improvements, useful content, strong site architecture, and relevant authority signals, supported by regular monitoring and testing.

Ultimately, SEO is less about how many techniques you know and more about understanding which technique to use, when to use it, and how it contributes to the website's overall search visibility and business goals.

SEO involves a combination of techniques rather than one fixed method. I generally divide SEO into technical SEO, on-page SEO, content optimization, local SEO, and off-page SEO.

Some important areas include keyword research, search intent analysis, title and heading optimization, internal linking, technical audits, Core Web Vitals, mobile optimization, structured data, local optimization, content development, digital PR, and earning relevant backlinks.

I think the most effective approach is to focus on creating genuinely useful content and a technically strong website rather than relying on outdated tactics or excessive link building. SEO is an ongoing process, so monitoring rankings, organic traffic, conversions, and search visibility is equally important.

The exact techniques used should depend on the website, industry, competition, and business goals.
