I would suggest you to install CSF - config server & security firewall on your server, you can configure it as per your need.

You would use the same mitigation strategies as a physical server environment.
For Distributed Denial of Service attacks, the use of Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) and firewalling between the VPS and Internet. The architecture in this scenario depends on the VPS provider and their Layer-2/3 connectivity with the outside world. Using Amazon EC2 for example, you don't have a direct Layer-3 connection to the outside world by default, so Amazon's infrastructure would bear the brunt of most types of DDoS attacks with exception to resource exhaustion attacks on Internet-facing services you have plugged through to the outside world.
For brute forcing attacks, hardening of the guest operating system would be the first order of priority, in addition to implementing internal firewall controls to limit access to Internet-facing applications. Other obvious requirements would be aggressive password expiration policies, enhanced password complexity rules, and the use of multiple factor authentication methods including One Time Passwords (OTP).
