Latent Semantic Indexing, is answer of search engine(Google) to regular keyword stuffing of many spammy websites in the world. Webpage are crawled by a search engine and the most common words and phrases are collected, combined and identified as the keywords for the page. In LSI approach, search engine not only uses meta tags and keywords appear several times, but it also looks for synonyms related to a particular word, and assign it as your webpage keyword and rank it higher than other sites competing for the same keyword.

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is a mathematical method used to determine the relationship between terms and concepts in content. The contents of a webpage are crawled by a search engine and the most common words and phrases are collated and identified as the keywords for the page.

Copied from Google. Simply said: It is a method by which search engine go through a webpage, list the keywords in the content of that webpage and prioritize the webpage for ranking based on the relevance of keywords.

The LSI process started with Google's algorithm. LSI was implemented in the Google algorithm in 2004 to help the search engine deliver more relevant results to users.

But it wasn't just about keywords. LSI opened the doors for Google to understand anchor text used in hyperlinks and "link neighborhoods," or groups of sites that link to one another.

With all of that in one update, Google's search results dramatically changed. They weren't just looking for exact-match keywords anymore — the algorithm could understand synonyms and context.
