Canonical URL is new standard adopted by Google, Yahoo and MSN, that can help to avoid unwanted duplicated content problem.

Code is based on meta tags module, with lot of things removed.

Module operates in 2 modes: automatic and manual ('Automatic mode' checkbox in settings page).
In manual mode, canonical url is switched off by default, and is shown only for nodes with canonical url

Canonical url is placed with the help of canonical tag on webpages having duplicate webpage issues. With the help of canonical tag you can add the url on duplicate pages to tell google bots that those are not the original pages and don't give them value for ranking on SERP.

Example ; <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/" />

A canonical URL is used to avoid the duplicate web content issue. It will improve the site SEO. Those are used to describe the home page. Visitors used to see the canonical URL.

If you've already added canonical tags then no need to add 301 redirect. canonical tags are more appropriate than 301 redirect. This is the best practice so you can keep them, no need to add 301 redirect.

Canonical Urls are on the page and define which url the page should be indexed as. This is used when you have one or more url parameters that might resolve that same content.

Rel canonical is a tag in the header of your HMTL that tells search engines which piece of content is the original and which one is a duplicate.

There are multiple situations where canonical should be used for duplicate content:

Multiple URLs: e-commerce websites which offer filter options like prices, sizes, colors, categories have a lot of URLs with duplicate content

HTTP, HTTPS, WWW: a search engine can see http://www.mywebsite.com, https://mywebsite.com and https://www.mywebsite.com as different websites and will index them as such

www.example.com
example.com
www.example.com/index.html
example.com/home.asp
