The main difference between Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click (PPC) is that traffic coming from SEO (organic) is free while traffic generated from PPC is not free (as the name implies you have to pay a cost per click).

Pay-per-click which is widely known as PPC, also called cost per click (CPC), is an internet advertising model which is used for direct traffic to websites. In PPC advertiser pays a publisher depending upon the clicks of ad. To get traffic in short time PPC can be helpful. While SEO is used to gain organic traffic. The time for results through SEO is not fixed but when the time is less PPC will be helpful.

PPC: Pay per Click. It is a paid technique which is used to promote your website by paying to publisher when you get a click on your ad. It is a instant technique but short term method.
SEO: Search Engine Optimization. Optimization of a website according the rules of search engine. It is a cost effective method but slow one, however it provides long term results.

But SEO is the better option than PPC.

SEO or search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your website in search engines. The process helps to build your online identity and reputation to benefit your online business.

PPC stands for pay-per-click, a model of internet marketing in which advertisers pay a fee each time one of their ads is clicked. Essentially, it's a way of buying visits to your site, rather than attempting to “earn” those visits organically. Search engine advertising is one of the most popular forms of PPC.
