They're only ever useful for getting visitors to your site, it's really marketing not SEO. And also most directory sites will give you very few visitors because those sort of sites don't often get many visitors themselves.

One rule of thumb is to test submitting to a few for traffic purposes, if the amount of visitors you get is worth the effort you're lucky, otherwise you're probably wasting your time.

Directory submissions are no more important these days as Google considers these sites as spam with very less content. Hence these websites are rarely crawled and indexed by Google.

I think when directory submission is not effective Was before some years because this time Google gave importance only fresh content. But directory submission have not dead completely, submit only high pr directory like DMOZ
