Use 301 when you change the page URL and don't want to loose link juice.
Use rel canonical when you have multiple pages with similar content and want to tell search engines which page is important, or index.

301 redirection is used to redirect the broken link page to a new page in order to avoid the backlinks created for that website. Canonical URL is used to avoid the duplicate pages having similar content.

The big reasons marketers might set up a 301 redirect are:

1. To associate common web conventions (http://, www., etc.) with one URL to maximize domain authority (hint: this is the same situation as the scenario we outlined above.)

2. To rebrand or rename a website with a different URL

3. To direct traffic to a website from other URLs owned by the same organization

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently.
