The main limitation is the poor browser support of XHTML. Internet Explorer and other user agents cannot parse XHTML as XML. Thus, it is not that extensible language as one might think.

Limitations when serving XHTML pages are given below:
1. Perhaps the biggest issue is the poor browser support XHTML currently enjoys.
2. Internet Explorer and a number of other user agents cannot parse XHTML as XML.
3. Thus, it is not the extensible language it was promised to be.

At present, there are hardly any browsers that offer benefits when receiving and processingXHTML documents. The most frequently used browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer) does not even support XHTML.

One of the prime limitation while serving XHTML pages is not an extensible language as this language cannot be parsed as XML to internet explorer and many other browser hence it has poor browser support.
