No,backlinks are not really important.Backlinks are generally creating for promoting a website.

This is possible to have high rank without backlinks if::
1.Content of your site is good
2.Competition of a particular keyword is limited
3.Keyword is familiar to the people and people generally search for it
4.Quality is more important rather than quantity

I think it possible. Unique and fresh content, right less competition and SEO friendly domain name is good to getting good PR.

Yes of-course we can rank without any backlink if our website having good quality content. It'll be more easy to rank if there is keyword in domain name.

Without any links at all pointing towards your site not only will it not rank very ... For ranking especially with regard to competitive keywords, you ...

I completely agree with tah123 but for more competitive keywords you have to improve ur websites backlinks.

But as far as I heard that rank depends on backlinks. If we have more and more backlinks then it is more better for getting pagerank.

Normally people will check your website worthiness through page rank. The higher page rank you have, the more worthy to your website. This statement may not true but somehow, it takes some weight. So, generate more backlinks so that your website can rank higher.

Of course you can rank in search engine without backlinks but you can rank higher with backlinks
