Press release are becoming popular specially among bloggers and internet marketers. By promoting either your blog, product or service to various press release sites, it helps to build traffic to you blog and visibility, credibility and authority to your site.

I don't think press release is an effective way to get traffic for a website unless the press is very attracting.
