what is google index?

Please share your review about google index, what is this and how its important for seo work, really i am not familiar to seo, i am new in this field, i want learn. so please help me guys,

Google index means Google maintain index to for all billions of site and by help of this site we can easily search through keywords. And in this Google used cache to know update of site and copyright that content.

Google index means it was collection of all information of that services which was provided by Google, Google product and also it will included the official and unofficial website details.
