Very good tips for any beginner. Although I do not think you should use CSS but rather you must use CSS if you wish to speed up your website.

Avoid large graphic files, animation, complex frames and flash as they consume lots of time to load. Do not have color overlapping the text. Do away with complex navigation.

I don't really want to minimize images, but I can definitely optimize them. Images are a big part of the website I am building for a volunteer organization as we need compelling images to share our story..

Thanks for your valuable suggestion. It really helps us much while designing a website. However, a flash file takes time to load compare to normal text site and doing SEO for flash site is also difficult one.

Nice tips which also help to get easy to get good ranking if we have clear all the issue when we create new site.

Definitely change Caching if you're applying PHP or some sort of CakePHP setup. It causes a huge difference. Cache, cache , cache.

Run adaware and spybot deleting anything they find.
Run Hijackthis (this shows all BHO's on ur browser~very important)
Run free online scan (trend.com bitdefender.com pandasoftware.com) remove any findings.
