Well, paid directories are not that good for the SEO. As of now a days search engines are consider paid link building as a negative I mean black hat technique. You don;t have to worry about your links but you have to worry about your sites and its reputation in eyes of search engine.
It can be beneficial but depends on how you choose those paid directories. If you go for yahoo directory then it can be a good option but will not suggest you to go for other low ranking directories, even for free one.
I never paid web directories, you have so many quality free web directories...
