You have to do work on different task like Directory submission, Article submission, Social Book Marking, Forums and many more, when you have approved links of your site then do work on them as well. Suppose you do directory and you have approved directory link of your site then do some work on that link that will become your back link.
I think blog post,forum comments and social networking are much more effective link building methods.
I am working in seo field since last 1 year and on that basis i can say social bookmarking, wiki site, WEB 2.0, article submission, blog comments, forum posting, and directory submission would be a good option to earn backlinks.
