There is a future in both Seo and programming also but in Seo a time come when you got your saturation level and in programming you have always remain to be active with your work also get to learn different language... also after a year of experience you may found a great experience and confidence in your capabilities that where you stand in between the competition... then a big jump come to cross your limit and get the good money for yours...

There will always be a need for programmers. SEO is not needed now by websites that participate heavily in social networks for their traffic. Not that I think that SEO is going away anytime soon, I would definitely not plan a future at this point in time on just SEO. Maybe a degree in marketing with a emphasis on Internet marketing to include SEO.

Both are important in making your websites visible to the internet....
