Basically shared hosting is for those who do not require dedicated hosting services due to the various reasons like the small scale of business operations, cost, etc. In layman we can say that the major difference between dedicated hosting and shared hosting is, in shared hosting resources like bandwidth, server, storage, etc are shared by multiple users (though resources are shared, security is maintained), whereas, in dedicated hosting the resources are dedicated to the one particular user, not shared with any other user.

Hi,
Shared hosting is Web hosting in which the service provider serves pages for multiple Web sites, each having its own Internet domain name, from a single Web server. Most Web hosting companies provide shared hosting. Although shared hosting is a less expensive way for businesses to create a Web presence, it is usually not sufficient for Web sites with high traffic. In my opinion, a shared hosting plan hosts multiple accounts on a single dedicated IP address. They are usually used to save costs and space for hosting. Shared hosting is not very recommendable as they do not provide data security as the same space and IP address is shared between multiple clients.

Depending on the type of website you have, shared hosting can be a cheap option to keep your business online.
If you have a portfolio or a simple presentation website, then shared hosting is alright. If your website does not have lots of traffic or runs many scripts, sure :)
But, if you need emails to be sent smoothly, do opt in for a dedicated IP address - this means your account will be the only one hosted on that IP address and your emails will not be influenced by other users from the same servers (yes, some users spam and get the IP blacklisted).
Once your business grows, you can always migrate to a VPS or even a dedi.
Best of luck!
