What is Conanical Errer?
If your website doesn't point to the same URL structure with www and without www, then your website has canonical error.
When your home page opens with both "http://www.site.com" and "http://site.com" is known as canonical error. Sometime Canonical URL (best URL version) is also referred as "Preferred Domain".
You can find everything related to canonical links on google support pages

Canonical issues are one of the things that cause significant issues with search engine optimization.
when you have similar content on different url then you need to redirect it to all url to single url. thats called canonization

Because of development issues, server settings, programming platforms, and even natural site progression a site may have multiple version of a homepage, or even an entire site. Let’s say you upgraded your site from an html site to a php site. Many times in the crossover pages are left on the server and are crawlable to the robots. These present several issues. You may have the same content and the new page never gets indexed. Links back to you may be to different versions. To mention just two of the most serious issues.
I’ve seen a website that had 8 individual and crawlable versions of their homepage live at the same time. This can reduce the strength of your page. (Ever see a site that has a lower homepage PR than an internal page?) The simplest and least painful way to fix this is with 301 redirects.
This is a simple fix.
Go to Webmaster Central and choose one (preferably the one with the most links if possible) and select it as your primary.
Either remove the other, or if there are different links pointing to it, 301 redirect them to the correct one that you just told google was your primary.
If there are no links pointing to the page I recommend requesting a de-index of the page - also in google.
If you are using an xml sitemap and/or html site map be sure the page you are pointing at is the correct version.
I would also do a global search and replace on your entire site or run a tool like Xenu and it will identify all pages and internal links and you can do it manually.
Canonical Error means if your website is not opening with or without www it is a canonical error. And see if you have several URLs with same content then redirect it to a single URL.
There are some pretty good Google videos on the subject.
Basically each different URL is treated as a separate document -- which results in fissured link juice
