NoFollow Link has a special HTML Markup inside that tells the Search Engines like Google to NOT FOLLOW the destination inside the link.
Nofollow link is a attribute of Anchor text in HTML.It instruct the crawlers or bots that don't follow the link.Webmasters are use this attribute to protect website against spammers.
I don't think nofollow link is useful for SEO while it provide too little weight for SEO purpose.
Unless the nofollow links do bring you lot of quality and unique traffic and give you lot of interaction with the visitors from the backlinks.
Then it might prove the links do useful,if no then is waste of time of doing no follow links.

Nofollow links virtually not useful to improve ranking in SERP but it gives you traffic which helpful for you in other way. you should not have all dofollow links, there must be proper balance between do and no follow links.
