Google hasn’t announced a launch date for its mobile-first index. There are many unanswered questions. Google has said that it will provide a lot of notice before switching, but in my view the launch could be as early as the first quarter of 2018. The end of the first quarter is six months away.

How long did your last redesign take to strategize, create, and develop? It was probably longer than six months. If you operate a separate mobile site with limited content, or if your separate mobile site is not optimal, start planning mobile improvements or a move to responsive design now. Don’t wait until Google makes its announcement, which may not leave you enough time to prepare.

We all know the Google mobile-first index is coming soon, probably in the next few months or so. To prepare, it seems Google is encouraging webmasters to go responsive with their websites.

Google has just published a how-to on moving your m-dot site to responsive. The techniques are pretty basic, but it is an excellent reminder that while Google supports many mobile implementations, they do recommend responsive. In fact, Google has recommended that if you are switching to responsive, do it before the mobile first rollout.

Now, Google is moving toward the creation of an index that's tailored and optimized for the mobile browsing experience. This has big implications for businesses that get most or all of their leads from Google's organic search. Here are some things business owners can do to prepare: Have A Mobile Site

Right now, Google crawls the web from a desktop user’s point of view and catalogs websites based on their desktop version. Being mobile-friendly improves a site’s SEO, but the actual content of a mobile site doesn’t affect the desktop site’s ranking in SERPs currently.

Google has indexed your site based on your desktop experience and the content that exists upon it.Google will begin to index and rank your site based on the content on your mobile experience, and not your desktop experience as it has done historically.

Here are the official tips from Google on this:

Make sure the mobile version of the site also has the important, high-quality content. This includes text, images (with alt-attributes), and videos - in the usual crawlable and indexable formats.

Structured data is important for indexing and search features that users love: it should be both on the mobile and desktop version of the site. Ensure URLs within the structured data are updated to the mobile version on the mobile pages.

Metadata should be present on both versions of the site. It provides hints about the content on a page for indexing and serving. For example, make sure that titles and meta descriptions are equivalent across both versions of all pages on the site.

No changes are necessary for interlinking with separate mobile URLs (m.-dot sites). For sites using separate mobile URLs, keep the existing link rel=canonical and link rel=alternate elements between these versions.

Check hreflang links on separate mobile URLs. When using link rel=hreflang elements for internationalization, link between mobile and desktop URLs separately. Your mobile URLs' hreflang should point to the other language/region versions on other mobile URLs, and similarly link desktop with other desktop URLs using hreflang link elements there.

Ensure the servers hosting the site have enough capacity to handle potentially increased crawl rate. This doesn't affect sites that use responsive web design and dynamic serving, only sites where the mobile version is on a separate host, such as m.example.com.

Hey, Here is 2020 ane Mobile First Index is still not fully rolled out. But if you are still afraid if your website is ready for it, just be sure that content available on Desktop is available on Mobile. It is all for Mobile First Index.

Another thing is to think of future ranking signals. They will be designed for Mobile like f.eg. Core Web Vitals. But it is not the thing of Mobile First Index but general Google direction.

    Table of contents.
Make sure that Googlebot can access and render your content.
Make sure that content is the same on desktop and mobile.
    Check your structured data.
Put the same metadata on both versions of your site.
Check the placement of your ads.
    Check visual content. ...
Additional best practices for separate URLs.
