As a link building tactic, broken link building is an effective, white-hat, scalable, content-focused link building strategy that builds links through finding broken links, recreating that broken content, and helping webmasters replace broken links with your corrected link

The previous answer is spot on. You identify links that are broken on websites and approach those webmasters to indicate the broken lin. You can as pointed out recreate the content that the broken link points to by viewing the old content with a server like web archive. Recreate the content BUT enhance is to be much more superior than previous and add more value to it. Once thats done you would have abtter chance at the webmaster changing the broken link to you updtaed content.

Finding broken links is somewhat of an art. A good way is to see what broken links exist on Wikipedia and recreate the content as discussed above. When you find broken links on wikipedia not only can you get a link from wikipedia but you can then reverse engineer the links pointing to that broken link and approach other webmsaters again as adicussed above. Using wikipedia is a good starting point as it has a diverse range of topics which will most likely cover the industry your in!

Broken link building is a tactic that involves finding resources in your niche that are no longer live, recreating a version of the content and reaching out to webmasters who link to that content asking them to replace the broken link with a link to your newly created resource. You’re providing value to the webmaster, helping them clean up their website and the web in general, while also building links to your website.

Broken link building may perhaps be the most effective, white-hat link building strategy in years. In particular, broken link building is appealing because the success of the campaign is directly proportional to how much good you do for the web. You profit only if you create good content to replace lost or abandoned content that webmasters still want to link to. This is the type of strategy that marries so many of the competing interests our industry: content vs. links, link earning vs link building, inbound vs. outbound, etc

Broken link building is the link building technique that is a white-cap link building procedure which gains links by finding broken links, replicating that broken link's substance, and helping website admins convert broken links with your rectified link for link building purposes.
