Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Historically, the index primarily used the desktop version of a page's content when evaluating the relevance of a page to a user's query.

Mobile-First Indexing is the initiative set up by Google that allows the mobile version of your website to be the most important one. Traditionally, Google has taken a desktop-first indexing approach, which meant that their crawlers determine your rankings based on the information gathered from the desktop version of a site.

Until now, Google indexed websites using mainly their classic version (desktop index). If a mobile version of the site existed, it could help to increase its visibility. But now, more than half of searches online are via mobile. It therefore seemed logical that Google put forward the best sites for mobile use.

Google’s Mobile First Indexing is live from this month (March 2018). Initially Google has planned to move all the sites to mobile first indexing in the starting of 2018, as development of the indexing stage and shift preparatory steps were not completed, there is a delay in this process but now it is live.
