Mobile-First Indexing is the initiative set up by Google that allows the mobile version of your website to be the most important one. Traditionally, Google has taken a desktop-first indexing approach, which meant that their crawlers determine your rankings based on the information gathered from the desktop version of a site.

Mobile-first indexing means that Google would primarily use the mobile version to rank pages from a website, to understand the structured data and to show it accordingly in the mobile search results.
Mobile First Indexing mean Google will give the mobile version of the content a priority for indexing and ranking. Before Mobile first indexing update, Google used to crawl and index the desktop version primarily
Google is crawling the web as a smartphone browser would render your website, as opposed to how a desktop browser would.
Until now, Google indexed websites using mainly their classic version (desktop index). If a mobile version of the site existed, it could help to increase its visibility. But now, more than half of searches online are via mobile. It therefore seemed logical that Google put forward the best sites for mobile use.
Google’s Mobile First Indexing is live from this month (March 2018). Initially Google has planned to move all the sites to mobile first indexing in the starting of 2018, as development of the indexing stage and shift preparatory steps were not completed, there is a delay in this process but now it is live.
