In HTML and XHTML, an image map is a list of coordinates relating to a specific image, created in order to hyperlink areas of the image to different destinations. For example, a map of the world may have each country hyperlinked to further information about that country.

An image map is an image that acts as a link, but instead of simply acting as a link to a single page, the image acts as a link to multiple pages.

It used to be that nearly every website had an image map on most of their pages. Many sites used image maps for their navigation, and a lot of sites liked to come up with a visual theme for their site that would be displayed through an image map.

Image map is a DOM element defined with the <map> tag. It is used in conjunction with <img> elements to specify an image with clickable areas. The <map> tag has multiple <area> elements, and each of them defines a separate clickable area in the image map.

The idea behind an image map is that you should be able to perform different actions depending on where in the image you click.

To create an image map you need an image, and a map containing some rules that describe the clickable areas.

There are two types of Image Maps - Client Side Image Maps and Server side Image Maps. Here we are learning how to a Client Side Image Maps by using HTML. With a client side Image Map, you can specify a list of areas that will be used as the links. The < map > tag is used to define a client-side Image Map.

In Web page development, an image map is a graphic image defined so that a user can click on different areas of the image and be linked to different destinations. You make an image map by defining each of the sensitive areas in terms of their x and y coordinates (that is, a certain horizontal distance and a certain vertical distance from the left-hand corner of the image). With each set of coordinates, you specify a Uniform Resource Locator or Web address that will be linked to when the user clicks on that area.
