Canonical URLs relate to the concept of selecting the best URL for the web pages that the visitors want to see. Also, known as canonical tags, these URLs help in content syndication when multiple versions of a same page become available over the Internet. Thus, it is used to resolve issues related to content duplication.

For example, most people would consider these the same urls:

    www.example.com
    example.com/
    www.example.com/index.html
    example.com/home.asp

The rel=canonical element, often called the “canonical link”, is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues. It does this by specifying the “canonical URL”, the “preferred” version of a web page – the original source, even. Using it well improves a site's SEO.

A canonical URL, sometimes called a "canonical tag," is an HTML attribute that tells search engines where to set the search value or "juice link" for pages with duplicate or very similar content. Online stores often use canonical marks for product pages, which is necessary to maintain the overall search value.

A canonical tag (aka "rel canonical") is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs.

A canonical URL lets you tell search engines that certain similar URLs are actually the same. Sometimes you have products or content that can be found on multiple URLs — or even multiple websites, but by using canonical URLs (HTML link tags with the attribute rel=canonical), you can have these on your site without harming your rankings.

An SEO point of view it is similar to 301 redirections, you are indicating search engines that all multiple or different URL version should be referred to one single URL.
