SEO works, the problem is sometimes the niche is very, very competitive that you cannot expect to rank in at least the first few months. When our methodology cannot rank the site fast enough, we go into a more in-depth SEO that analyzes every possible ranking opportunities possible and then implement all of that.

I don't believe you should SEO alone anyway, it's just one of the tools in digital marketing. As others have said, there's still:
Social ads (Facebook is pretty good in driving traffic)
Social media activities
PPC
Blog outreach
Content placement at higher-end magazines
Email marketing
