Here uptime is the amount of time your website is online and if your website is online you can gain your ranking in the search engine.
Downtime is the amount of time your website is offline which ultimately results in losing ranking in search engines.

Uptime: Can either refer to the time the server last came up, how long it has been up, or in less common cases how much (%) of time it has been up.

Downtime: More often refers to a % of time the service has been down. For instance, no more than 2 hours per month stated in the SLA (Service Level Agreement). It could also be used to indicate the service will be down for maintenance, though recently this is usually called planned/unplanned outage.

Uptime: is the average time that your servers are up and running successfully
ex: say if a company says they guarantee 99.95% uptime it is calculated annually 365 x 24 = 8760 hours
    so if there is a downtime of 4 hours in a year then calculated as (8756 / 8760) x 100 = 99.95%

Downtime: is the average time that the website is offline, more the downtime more the Clients one would loose.

This can vary a little depending on context, as these have been used for different purposes.

It is a term where context is important.

Uptime is the amount of time that a server has stayed up and running. This is usually listed as a percentage, like "99.9% uptime. " Uptime is a great measure of how good a Web hosting provider is at keeping their systems up and running.Mar

"Uptime is the measure of the uninterrupted time that a hosting system experiences. Ideally, uptime would be at 100% (i.e. zero downtime) but in the real world, this is extremely difficult to achieve. In layman's terms, Uptime is the number of hours that a server is working and available and is the opposite of downtime."

Uptime :- It means the total time for which a machine has been running. It is applicable to lathe machines as much as it is applicable to web hosting server.

Downtime :- It means the total time for which a machine is not working. It can be caused due to machine failure or servicing pre-requirements etc. It is applicable to anything that runs or operates, just as it is applicable to web hosting server.

To become more web host–oriented read independent web hosting reviews that are known to be of high quality and the most up-to-date. They contain information regarding affordable web hosting firms.

Personally I have had a good run dealing with SiteCanyon.com web host. Uptime is great - 99.99% and fast server.
They have cPanel with Softaculous Auto Installer (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Magento +446 more!) - recommended host if you need professional provider.

Uptime is the amount of time when your website is up and running and downtime in web hosting is the amount of time when your server is working without interruptions. If your server is working and your website isn't - it is probably an issue with web development, and this doesn't really count as downtime in web hosting.

For me Uptime and Speed, Support and Price are very important factors when choosing a right web host. Would also prefer a cpanel host.

I am quite happy using vpsblocks.com.au cloud hosting services.
I was pleasantly surprised by the backup tools they provide which I did not expect at all.

    Thumbs up

    Uptime

Uptime is a great measure of how good a Web hosting provider is at keeping their systems up and running. If a hosting provider has a high uptime percentage, then that means that their servers stay up and running and so any site you host with them should stay up and running too.

    Downtime

Downtime also referred as outage duration is the time period when the system fails to provide or achieve its primary function. During downtime websites that are hosted on the specific server will be unavailable and offline

Uptime is a computer industry term for the time during which a computer is operational. Downtime is the time when it isn't operational. ... For example, one standard for uptime that is sometimes discussed is a goal called five 9s - that is, a computer that is operational 99.999 percent of the time.
