    What is DHCP server?

    What is DHCP server?

DHCp - Dynamoc Host Configuration Protocol
It automatically provides and assigns IP addresses, default gateways and other network parameters to client devices.

DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol): it is network management protocol which are used on UDP/IP networks in order to assign Ip address automatically from a defined name of numbers.
DHCP responds to broadcast queries by Clients
DHCP runs at the application layer of the TCP/Ip protocol to dynamically assign IP's changing the Subnetmask, default gateway and DNS with the help of MAC(Media Access Control) it prevents multiple assigning of IP's.

Def. - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network protocol that enables a server to automatically assign an IP address to a computer from a defined range of numbers (i.e., a scope) configured for a given network.

And this is how DHCP client-server works.

A user turns on a computer with a DHCP client.
The client computer sends a broadcast request (called a DISCOVER or DHCPDISCOVER), looking for a DHCP server to answer.
The router directs the DISCOVER packet to the correct DHCP server.
The server receives the DISCOVER packet. Based on availability and usage policies set on the server, the server determines an appropriate address (if any) to give to the client. The server then temporarily reserves that address for the client and sends back to the client an OFFER (or DHCPOFFER) packet, with that address information. The server also configures the client's DNS servers, WINS servers, NTP servers, and sometimes other services as well.
The client sends a REQUEST (or DHCPREQUEST) packet, letting the server know that it intends to use the address.
The server sends an ACK (or DHCPACK) packet, confirming that the client has a been given a lease on the address for a server-specified period of time.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a standardized network protocol. It is used in Internet Protocol networks for dynamic distribution of network configuration parameters, such as IP addresses for interfaces and services. A DHCP server can run on an operating system such as Linux or Windows and is used to distribute IP addresses automatically to the clients in the network.

A DHCP server automatically sends the required network parameters for clients to properly communicate on the network. Without it, the network administrator has to manually set up every client that joins the network, which can be cumbersome, especially in large networks. DHCP servers usually assign each client with a unique dynamic IP address, which changes when the client’s lease for that IP address has expired.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). It has a direct impact on millions of IP addresses, most likely including yours. DHCP is at the heart of assigning you and everyone their IP address.

DHCP is a network management tool that works alongside two other protocols, namely the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP), both of which are required in order to connect devices to each other and to a network.

By using a client-server model, a DHCP server becomes the host, while the device connected to the network is the client. As soon as the client makes a request to the network for an IP address, the host assigns an IP address taken from a list of available options it holds. This then allows the communication between the device and the network to happen.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and is a network protocol used on IP networks where a DHCP server automatically assigns an IP address and other information to each host on the network so they can communicate efficiently with other endpoints.

    Hi Friends,
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway. RFCs 2131 and 2132 define DHCP as an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard based on Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP), a protocol with which DHCP shares many implementation details. DHCP allows hosts to obtain necessary TCP/IP configuration information from a DHCP server.
