    Hi Friends,
A spider is a program that visits Web sites and reads their pages and other information in order to create entries for a search engine index. Spiders are called spiders because they usually visit many sites in parallel at the same time, their "legs" spanning a large area of the "web."

A spider is a small creature with eight legs and two fangs that makes webs, nests and cocoons out of the silk that it produces. An example of a spider is the character Charlotte from the story Charlotte's Web

The spiders called crawlers, are used by Internet search engines to collect information about Web sites and individual Web pages. They crawl through the Internet and create queues of Web sites and the spider reads through all the text, hyperlinks, meta tags on each website they reach and provides a profile to the search engine about these website.

Most of the search engines use programs called spiders to index websites. Spiders follow hyperlinks and collect textual and meta information for search engine databases. It may rate the content being indexed to help the search engine determine relevancy levels to a search.

A Web crawler, sometimes called a spider or spiderbot and often shortened to crawler, is an Internet bot that systematically browses the World Wide Web, typically for the purpose of Web indexing (web spidering). ... Mechanisms exist for public sites not wishing to be crawled to make this known to the crawling agent.
